Unmasking Your Thyroid  Bloggers Event

Last Sept. 21, 2016, I’ve attended A Bloggers Event entitled Unmasking Your Thyroid at Holiday Inn, Makati, wherein Merck, the World’s oldest pharmaceutical and leading pharmaceutical in the Philippine talks about Thyroid Disorder, to give highlights and awareness among Filipino’s.


According to the Phil. Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism in 2012,  one in 11 Filipino Adults has a disease called Goiter, and around one in 12 Filipino Adults suffers from some form of Thyroid Disorders.


Millions of Filipino’s are affected by thyroid problems, but, the awareness of this condition has low ratio percentage, and some thyroid symptoms are mistaken with other pathological entities. Mostly, individuals ignored their illnesses and fearful of having a physical check-up.


On the said event, Dr. Nemencio Nicodemus, Jr, Pres. Of the Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism & a college professor at UP College of Medicine & Ateneo School of Public Health, gave an informative discussion regarding the types, classification, self-screening test, sign & symptoms of thyroid disease and their mainstay treatment and diagnostic lab. findings.

Here are some symptoms of Hypothyroidism:

Slower metabolism, gaining weight even less consumption of meals
Slow action pace, Fatigable
Having an Episode of Depression
Cold Intolerant
Irregular Menstruation peroids

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism includes:

Hyperactive Metabolism
Weight Loss Noticeable
Heart palpitations
Irritability
Insomia
Sweating and Heat Intolerance
Hand Tremors


For early detection of Thyroid Disorder, I highly recommend that every individuals should have a regular check-up. If you noticed any significant symptoms that correlates thyroid condition. Don’t be afraid to visit your medical doctor. Remember, Cure is better than prevention.


Seraphimsnotes Points of  View:  I just wanna share my thoughts & some stories about the Thyroid condition, My mom was diagnosed last 2003 for Toxic Goiter. She had taken a lot of diagnostic testing to rule out her thyroid disease. She was able to take some medications like PTU. She was so fearful of having a surgery or even a biopsy to check if its already calcified, benign or malignant. We ordinarily take her to the doctor for regular check up, due to long term used of medications for her thyroid and hypertension. Her kidney shuts down due to her maintenance drugs. So, I therefore conclude, if she was able to have her surgery taken for her toxic goiter.  I guess, it will have a big probability that she can still be alive today and to take care of us and her grand children. But, things happen for a reason. My mom is too afraid to take the surgery. I cannot blame her for that and I miss her every single day. But for others, I just wanna tell some truth about the Thyroid Disorder.

As a Physical Therapist, I were able to tell my mom the importance of early detection of the Thyroid Dse. & the best management my cousin suggested who is a Medical Practitioner as well, which is to have an early Surgery. But, for Individuals, who are so hesitant to take one step such as Biopsy. I suggest that you listen to your Doctor, He knows what's best for you. Be brave to face the inevitable. Love yourself and remember those children or family that needs and loves you, Courage is one step to have a healthy lifestyle for the welfare of your whole family.
